Below I have included formative and summative assessments used in Spanish I. My Spanish I curriculum follows the curriculum content of SOMOS, a comprehension based curriculum written by teacher author Martina Bex at the Comprehensible Classroom. I own the copyright to reproduce the materials below for my classroom. I edit the materials to fit the needs of my students, but the ideas and content are based off the curriculum written and developed by The Comprehensible Classroom.
First is a speaking assessment that students take early in Spanish I. This is the first speaking assessment that students take in Spanish I. Students record their speaking via FlipGrid, an online recording platform that keeps their recording secret from their peers and sends it only to the evaluator. In this assessment, students are focusing on narrating a short series of events.
Next is a comprehensive listening assessment used as part of a summative unit test. In this assessment, students have to identify which picture is being described based on the context of the sentence they hear. In this assessment, I am looking to see which words and phrases students are able to identify in familiar contexts.
Next is a writing assessment given in the spring of Spanish I. Students are given three choices for writing and evaluated on a proficiency rating of Novice Low - Novice High. In this assessment, students are required to use some vocabulary words, but are given a list with choices.
Finally I have included a sample summative reading comprehension assessment for Spanish I. This is a unit assessment based off three previous chapters of study. In this assessment, students first read a passage in Spanish and complete comprehension activities based off the reading. The activities chosen in this assessment are leveled off of Novice Low proficiency, then Novice Mid proficiency, and finally Novice High proficiency. As students progress through the assessment, it gives me a clearer picture of what their reading comprehension level is based off the activities they are able to complete well and those with which they struggle.
