Spring in Retiro Park, Madrid, Spain

Spanish I

The lesson plans below are part of a unit on a novel in Spanish I. The novel is the first time Spanish I students read a long text in my class. This unit is designed around reading and reading comprehension. I typically teach this unit in the spring and it is a nice change of pace for most students. This novel unit provides students a chance to demonstrate their language skills in a variety of ways and is a nice way to wrap up learning all the vocabulary that we have been working on throughout the year. Students read this novel after completing 9 chapters of study in the SOMOS curriculum. The first time I taught this novel was during the spring of 2020 when all schools were doing remote education. I have really changed the format from the first year that I taught the novel and made reading much more interactive. We read the novel as a class, act out scenes, and look at related content to broaden our language skills together as a class. Students seem to enjoy reading this novel and are very successful while reading. I am always so impressed with the skills my students show in writing and speaking after reading this novel. In the future, I would like to teach this novel earlier in the school year. While students do very well in this unit, I think they are ready to read this novel after 6 chapters of study instead of 9.
