In this section of my portfolio, you will find content that I have created, adapted, or collaborated on for my classroom. You will see sample lesson plans, lesson content, and assessment samples for each of the four classes that I teach. You will also find a reflection on each lesson included, discussing how I have changed and adapted those lessons from year to year to best fit the needs of my students.
As the only World Language teacher in my district, I have been responsible for designing and implementing a curriculum that is rigorous to all students, meets the state and national standards for World Languages, and best meets the needs of the students in my building. I have displayed the scope and sequence for each level of Spanish in our building. I believe the curriculum that I have established is engaging, rigorous, and meaningful to my students. I incorporate current events and pop culture into my lessons so that students can connect to the content. I also incorporate as much of Hispanic culture into my lessons as possible.
My Spanish I curriculum follows the SOMOS Curriculum, designed by Martina Bex at the Comprehensible Classroom. This curriculum is comprehension and proficiency based, working through high frequency verbs and vocabulary in Spanish.
When creating my Spanish II, III, and IV content, I wanted to focus on student interest as well as global issues and connecting the content to AP themes. While we do not currently have an AP program in my building, I wanted to prepare students for language learning after high school and cover as much culture and content as we could.
In Spanish II, the curriculum looks primarily at contemporary life, families and friends, and relationships. We do a country study of Spain as well.
In Spanish III, we look at global challenges, future planning, and Central American culture.
In Spanish IV, students look at using Spanish after high school in their careers, making plans, and do a cultural study of Ecuador.
